Doyle Brunson
Born in Longworth Texas in 1933, Doyle Brunson, father of four has also become the “Father of Texas Hold’em”, boosting its popularity to unprecedented heights.
During the first stage of his life Doyle showed great promise as an athlete, running track and playing basketball to such a standard that the then NBA team Minneapolis Lakers, showed great interest in this young man. Unfortunately, his career as a sportsman ended even before it had begun, cut short due to an accident in which his leg was shattered, preventing him from becoming the world class athlete he aspired to be. Still suffering the effects of this terrible accident, Doyle’s place at a Poker Table is easy to spot, marked by a crutch standing nearby.
Although he did play poker before this incident, it was during this time he turned the game into his number one priority. In 1962 Doyle was dealt yet another blow, diagnosed with cancer and given a mere three months to live. Again he beat the odds, and now 48 years later still sits at the winning table.
To date Doyle Brunson is said to have earned an estimated $5,100,000 in tournaments, two WSOP main event bracelets and 10 WSOP bracelets, placing him second only to Phil Hellmuth who has won 11.
Now aged 77, with a career spanning over half a century, Doyle continues to play. Winning the WPT Legends of Poker in 2004, Doyle still takes part in most important poker events.
Also writing what, some consider to be the Poker Bible (“Doyle Brunson’s Super System: A Course in Power Poker “) as well as; (“Doyle Brunson’s Super System II” and “According to Doyle“) The “Texas Dolly” continues to inspire young and older players alike, crowning him the King of professional poker.
Considered to be the man most responsible for taking Poker out of dark, dingy backrooms, and turning it into the popular culture we know today, Brunson was also the leader of the Texas Rounders, a group of men playing illegal high stakes Poker, outwitting the law. Eventually landing up in Las Vegas, audiences would come to watch him play, making Doyle one of the first tourist attractions in this city of glitz and glam.
Doyle has confirmed he will be attending our event Punta Cana Poker Classic. For more info on the event check www.puntacanapokerclassic.com
